A high resolution HeI excited photoelectron spectrum of the H2CO molecule.

Abstract: The HeI excited photoelectron spectrum of the H2CO molecule has been recorded with high resolution. Detailed studies have been carried out of the vibrational structure observed in the four photoelectron bands. The vibrational energies and intensities have been determined using a curve fitting procedure. In the outermost band corresponding to the X 2B2 electronic state of H2CO+ a very extensive new vibrational structure is observed, It has been analyzed primarily in terms of different vibrational progressions in the ν3 mode excited in various combinations with the ν1 and ν2 modes. These vibrational sates are not reached in direct photoelectron transitions but must be due to the presence of an intermediate state in the photoionization process similarly to what. has been found earlier for the CO molecule.
